A few significant qualities made Argon a top candidate for technical applications, such as providing nuclear physicists with the thick atmosphere necessary to segregate neutrons, in the waning years of the nineteenth century:

Without doubt, the widest early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs at the start of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial advancement of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s needed a dense inert gas, typically Argon-based. While none of these are true specialty-gas purity uses, their desirability is stronger than ever and they still make up a huge segment of Argon’s sales volume.

Contemporary specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in various analytical instrument applications, for example: in the detection and assessment of trace and ultra-trace elements by means of Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon also finds application in many types of Gas Chromatography, in particular those involving a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It also works as a carrier gas to analyze hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. More recently, Argon has seen greater use by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
